Energy Efficiency

Alaska has made impressive gains in energy efficiency services over the past several years.  Alaska Housing Finance Corporation continues to manage the successful Home Energy Rebate and Weatherization programs.  Public buildings are being audited and improved to save energy and money.  Examples of Alaskan families saving thousands of dollars yearly after completing an energy retrofit are common.   Energy efficiency makes good fiscal sense, so it’s natural to look for more opportunities for our state.

This year, the Alliance will be working to extend and expand an appliance swap out program that the state has implemented with stimulus funding.  Previously, disabled and senior Alaskans were eligible for a rebate to replace a major household appliance.  Old appliances use a lot of energy, costing Alaskans hundreds of dollars over the life of the washer, dryer, refrigerator, or freezer. Unfortunately, the federal funding for this program fhas run out.  The Alliance is asking the legislature to allocate funding for this successful  program, with an expansion so more Alaskans are eligible. 

The Alliance is also working to further energy efficiency in Alaska by asking the legislature to consider establishing an independent entity to exclusively provide energy efficiency services to homeowners, renters, and businesses.  An independent entity would provide consumers with a comprehensive set of efficiency services including weatherization, appliance swap-out, and lighting improvements.  Energy consumers in Minnesota, Oregon, and Vermont already enjoy the benefits of an independent entity and have seen significant savings on their energy bills.
