2010 Priority issues
Three priorities for the 2009/2010 26th legislative session
Alaska’s conservation community met in the fall of 2008 to discuss priorities for the upcoming legislative session. After careful consideration, The Alliance's 2009 / 2010 legislative priorities are:
Priority Update:
Oil prices are on the rise, incentivising energy efficiency and mass transit and filling the state's coffers with oil tax revenue. Unlike 2009, when low oil prices constricted the state's budget, the upcoming legislative session may prove to be more amicable to bills requiring an investment of funds.
Just before the start of the 2010 Legislative session the Senate has read all three of our priorities into the record - Senate Bill 150, Emerging Tech Fund (pdf); Senate Bill 152, Transportation Authority (pdf); and Senate Bill 121, Establishing Energy Efficiency standards (pdf). There is a strong possibility that some or all of the bills will find their way into House and Senate energy omnibus bills.
While it is true that these bills are still a ways from finishing the legislative process, it is only by working together as Alaskans that we can advance conservation legislation. A good opportunity this summer is to advance energy efficiency and emerging energy technology at the House and Senate Energy Committees' summer energy meetings. At these meetings legislators and industry experts will discuss Statewide Energy Plan and Alaska Department of Energy ideas.
Now more than ever we need your help to turn conservation values into state priorities.
