The Heat is On

"Now is the time to confront this challenge once and for all. Delay is no longer an option. The stakes are too high. The consequences, too serious." --President Barak Obama

Climate change and ocean acidification threatens Alaska's economy and way of life. The Heat is On campaign works with the National League of Conservation Voters to advance strong climate change and energy legislation on the federal level.

  • To address the problem of climate change here in Alaska, The Heat is On campaign is working to:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050

  • Establish a cap and trade program that relies strongly on the marketplace to set carbon prices

  • Use generated state revenues to fund clean energy technology and jobs as well as community and natural resource impact assistance, especially for Alaskan communities that need to be relocated.

Climate Change News:

  • A recent report by Global Change Research Program (GCRP) shows that Alaska has warmed by an averaged 3.4F over preceding 50 years. It is projected to warm by as much as 13F by the end of this century. Learn more about the GCRP report. Or download a (PDF) summary of the report at the bottom of this page.
  • The United States Congress is working to pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) introduced earlier this year by Rep. Henry Waxman and Rep. Edward Markey. Though the bill is soft on carbon pollution, it is a huge first step in Climate Change legislation.
