Industry backed Alaska bill could block citizen opposition to big projects

The Alaska Legislature is considering making it tougher for citizens to use the courts to stop oil, gas, mining or other industrial projects they oppose. The effort is pitting environmentalists against industry, and raising questions about whether only the moneyed should have access to the judicial system.

According to an early Tuesday announcement from the Alaska Public Interest Group (AKPIRG) and the Alaska Conservation Alliance (ACA), wind power advocates are celebrating a decision by the Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA) that amounts to a green light from state regulators for Cook Inlet Region Inc.'s Fire Island Wind Project.

Anchorage - As part of a national Hands Across The Sand day of action on Saturday, 85 Alaskans met at Point Woronzof and joined hands against offshore oil drilling. Similar events are taking place from the Pacific to Atlantic Coast, showing thousands of Americans united against offshore drilling and in favor of clean energy, a Sierra Club press release said.

Across Southeast, especially in communities not linked up to affordable hydroelectric power, energy costs are one of the biggest challenges to doing business. Whether a small retail outlet or a large industrial operation, we all know the high price of keeping our workplaces bright and warm to maintain productivity and attract customers. The commercial sector in Alaska pays approximately twice the national rate for energy, and with diesel prices on the rise, it's an issue we can't run from.
